Function Classification Structure

The Function Classification Structure is divided into primary functions and support functions. This separation is made to identify classifications of functions.

The primary functions are those that contribute directly to the major mission of the University. The support functions are those functions that are organized to provide direct support, or to supplement the mission of the primary function. Both the primary and support functions are defined as follows: 

  1. Instruction - The Instruction function consists of all formal educational activities in which a student engages to earn credit toward a degree or certificate at the University. Within the Instruction function are five (5) subfunctions as follows:

    1.1 General Academic Instruction
1.2 Occupational and Vocational Instruction
1.3 Community Education
1.4 Preparatory and Adult Basic Education
1.5 Departmental Research
  1. Research - The Research function comprises all research-related activities established within the University under the terms of agreements external to the University or separately budgeted and conducted with internal funds. Within the Research function are two (2) subfunctions as follows:

    2.1 Institutes and Research Centers
    2.2 Individual or Project Research
  1. Public Service - The Public Service function contains the activities within the University that produce outcomes directed toward the benefit of the community or individuals residing within the geographic service area of the University. Within the Public Service function are three (3) subfunctions as follows:

    3.1 Patient Services
    3.2 Community Services
    3.3 Cooperative Extension Services

  2. Academic Support - The Academic Support function contains those activities that support the primary function through the retention, preservation and display of materials, or provides services that directly assist the academic functions of the University. Within the Academic Support function are eight (8) subfunctions as follows:

    4.1 Libraries
    4.2 Museums and Galleries
    4.3 Audiovisual Services
    4.4 Computing Support
    4.5 Ancillary Support
    4.6 Academic Administration
    4.7 Course and Curriculum Development
    4.8 Academic Personnel Development
  1. Student Service - The Student Service function comprises all activities related to the University's student body, excluding the degree related activities and student records. Within the Student Service function are seven (7) subfunctions as follows:

    5.1 Student Services Administration
    5.2 Social and Cultural Development
    5.3 Counseling and Career Guidance
    5.4 Financial Aid Administration
    5.5 Student Auxiliary Services
    5.6 Intercollegiate Athletics
    5.7 College Work Study
  1. Institutional Support - The Institutional Support function consists of those activities within the University that provide campus-wide support to the other functions. Within the Institutional Support function are seven (7) subfunctions as follows:

    6.1 Executive Management
    6.2 Fiscal Operations
    6.3 General Administrative Services
    6.4 Logistical Services
    6.5 Physical Plant Operations
    6.6 Faculty and Staff Auxiliary Services
    6.7 Public Relations and Development

Scholarships and Fellowships - The Scholarships and Fellowships function provides the mechanism to identify those items pertaining to graduate and undergraduate grants-in-aid, stipends, fee waiver and prizes. Within the Scholarships and Fellowships function are three (3) subfunctions as follows:

    8.2 Fellowships
    8.7 SEOG - Supplemental Education Opportunity Grants

  2. Capital Outlays and Warehousing - The Capital Outlays and Warehousing function group provides a designation for recording all capital expenditures, construction in process, equipment depreciation and clearing activities for supplies and materials purchased by the institution that are intended for resale. Within the Capital Outlays and Warehousing functions are three (3) subfunctions as follows:

    9.1 Cost of Purchase for Resale
    9.3 Capital Cost - Building and Land Improvements
    9.4 Capital Cost - Equipment
